Figs. IV. 37-40

Jerash, Department of Antiquities, garden of the office beside the Artemis-temple, without inv.-no.

From Gerasa / Jerash, found in the northern hall (basilica) of the eastern baths 1984) at a distance of 5.5 m south of pillar H, between the bases nos. 11 and 3 (cf. Friedland 2003a, 422 fig. 9) .

White, medium-grained marble with perpendicular layers and black to green veins, according to the isotopic analysis probably from Thasos, Cape Vathy (Friedland 2001).

Preserved is only the thorax from the navel to the neck, head, lower body and all limbs are missing. It is possible also the the leg fragment cat.-no. 15 n. belongs to it, or alternatively to cat.-no. 6. The surface is covered with a transparent creamy patina, in the breaks the surface has greyish brownish steaks, partly with hard grey incrustation. Along the breast bone is a pockmarked nodule. The piece of marble protruding from the neck is pick marked, the rear of the statue is neglected in sculptural workmanship.

H 44 cm; W 36 cm; D 25 cm.

A long pointed corner of the thin scarf tissue is falling over the Silen’s right shoulder down to his breast, at the back drawn obliquely to the formerly extended left hand. The V-shaped tensors at the base of the neck indicate an emphatic torsion of the head upward to the left. The widely opened arm left arm pit is due to the raising movement of the arm. The right arm was probably lowered and extended. The torso thus belongs to a male personality in a move much comparable to the Satyr cat.-no. 6. The dimensions of both upper bodies correspond to each other.

The anatomic details of the thorax create a delicate relief of up-heavals and reductions on the modeled skin. The rhomboid sternum is clearly contrasted with the swelling breast. The engraved linea alba parts the chest and merges into the horizontal clavicle. The pointed nipple of the left breast protrudes. The arches of the ribs are not shown.
