Az-Zawiya al-Hilaliyya - Rapid Damage Assessment

Brief Summary

Al-Zawiya al-Hilaliyya was exposed to vandalism during the armed conflict in the Old City of Aleppo 2012 – 2016:

1. Changing of the name and function as zawiya to be Madrassa and the inscription above the entrance was removed.

2. Twelve graves located at the courtyard were removed by a radical group who controlled the area for a while during the armed conflict.

After 2015 the radical group left the area an al-Zawiya returned to its original function.

Value / Specifics: All damages are relating to the historical values of the Zawiya.

Recommendation class: RC1 > Maintenance/Preventive conservation
