Special importance

Some features of this mosque make it interesting and distinct. It is rather rare, first of all, to find the tomb of a Sufi shaykh inside the qibliyya. It is also interesting that a Sufi zawiya should stand as a separate architectural entity inside the mosque compound. It seems the two institutions had separate endowments as well.[1]

The mosque’s endowment continued to grow, both in its revenues and expenses, proving that the Jamiʿ al-Mashatiyya was a well-functioning neighborhood mosque that could provide all necessary religious services for its community.

Current situation

The mosque was heavily damaged during Syria’s recent conflict, causing parts of the building to collapse. The minaret was damaged and its gallery lost.[2]
