Other facets of the endowment constituted important urban projects encouraging and enabling urban and economic growth in Aleppo, like the foundation of new tanneries outside Bab Antakya to supplant the old one inside the city (ad-Dabbagha al-ʿAtiqa).[1] As the centerpiece of the endowment in Aleppo, Khan al-Jumruk complemented the other important endowments of the 16th century (cf. Khusrawiyya) and enabled Aleppo to play its important role in long-distance caravan trade in the 16th and 17th centuries.[2]
