Special importance

The designation ‘Great Mosque of Banqusa’ (Jamiʿ Banqusa al-Kabir) distinguishes this institution among the other Friday Mosques in the city and elevates it to the same, or almost the same, rank as the ‘Great Umayyad Mosque’ (al-Jamiʿ al-Umawi al-Kabir).[1]

The importance of the mosque’s endowment and the number of rituals performed in that mosque contrasts with the simpleness of its construction and the absence of decoration. In this regard, it resembles Ayyubid period architecture more than other Mamluke mosques from the 14th century.
