The Madrasat al-Firdaws is distinguished in several respects. The building is larger than other madrasas in Aleppo; it combines several religious and educational functions, madrasa teaching with mystical practices. The name refers to the ‘paradisiac’ images referred to in the inscription on the exterior wall and the gardens around the building. The founder Dayfa Khatun exhibited in her foundation not only her royal power, but her personal piety as well, making the Madrasat al-Firdaws the most notable example of female patronage in medieval Syria.

Current situation

The building is severely damaged. The whole northern part of the structure, including the portal, are almost totally destroyed.
