Jamiʿ al-Utrush has kept its function as a mosque while the mausoleum continues to house the tomb of Aqbugha al-Utrush. Ibn al-Shihna stated that Jamiʿ Altunbugha (723 AH / 1323 AD) was the first mosque a Mamluk governor built as a Friday mosque to supplement the role of the Great Mosque. After al-Utrush Mosque was completed in 812 AH / 1410 AD, the Friday prayer was occasionally held there and it came to host prayers during the feasts of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr.[1] In the time of Ibn al-Shihna (15th century), there were 20 mosques within the city walls for Friday prayers, aside from the Great Mosque. Jamiʿ al-Utrush was among the five built by Mamluk governors or their representatives. There were another 20 mosques outside the walls.[2]
