Preservation: From the 1970’s the site has undergone tremendous destruction by quarrying the old stones of the houses for new construction purposes (Atallah 2000). Whether traces of the mosque mentioned by G. Schumacher (Steuernagel 1927) survive, is not known. From the ancient cemetery a Roman funeral cave with a lintel decorated with two Sphinxes and a wreath (fig. 370.2) and several Byzantine inscriptions is still preserved (Atallah 2000).

Traveler Reports: “Ein ihn kreuzender, von mahrama kommender Weg führt uns zu den beiden Ruinenstätten srâs und el-ekfêr. Beide haben noch alte Gebäude aus muhammedanischer und früherer Zeit, und namentlich srâs war eine bedeutende, große Stadt. In beiden finden sich die Ruinen einer dschâmi’, ...” (Steuernagel 1927, A 425).
